Public transport in the Montafon valley

The public transport network in the Montafon valley is served by the regional train service Montafonerbahn, several long-distance bus lines and the on-call shared taxi called “go&ko”.

The Montafonerbahn is a regional train service operating between Schruns and the district capital of Bludenz. When it started up in 1905, the Montafonerbahn was the first electric standard-gauge train line in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. More than 100 years later, the Montafonerbahn has become one of the most successful regional train services in Austria according to a study by the Austrian Traffic Association (VCÖ), recording the biggest increase in passengers in the country in 2017. The number of passengers on the regional train service between Schruns and Bludenz grew by 6.3 percent to 1.44 million in 2017. The Montafonerbahn railway network between Schruns and Bludenz covers a length of almost 13 kilometres.

The regional association of Stand Montafon has been running a long-distance bus service in the Montafon valley since 1 June 2005. Montafonerbahn AG has taken over the concession for the Montafon bus service. The 320-kilometre route network is operated by mbsBus GmbH, transporting over nine million passengers per year. The Montafon valley’s long-distance bus service is financed by ticket fares as well as contributions from federal, regional and municipal authorities and the cableway operators of the Montafon valley. The municipalities of Stand Montafon want to offer locals and tourists alike comfortable green mobility using public transport, thereby contributing to economic success and good quality of life in the valley.

The on-demand shared taxi service called “go&ko” operates in the municipalities of St. Anton im Montafon, Vandans, Bartholomäberg, Tschagguns, Schruns, Silbertal, St. Gallenkirch and Gaschurn, taking night owls home or on to their next destination. The taxis can be booked by calling +43 5556 77500 or using the “ISTmobil” app at least 30 minutes before the required pickup time. The number of people as well as the pickup time and location need to be mentioned at the time of booking. As the on-demand shared taxi may pick up other passengers along the way, waiting times of up to 30 minutes after the requested pickup time may occur.
